1. What did you do before taking up a franchise?

I worked in legal firms since I was 18 years old, at the same time studying towards my Law degree. I practised as an attorney from 1999 and in 2005 I realised that my qualifications, experience and knowledge could be used in a different direction that could help people create wealth from their property investments.

2. Why did you choose this franchise?

I looked for a brand that had values that mirrored my own: Optimism, Integrity, Equality, Innovation, Collaboration, Personal Development, Loyalty and Gratitude. I found those at Just Property

3. What is a typical day for you as a franchisee?

  • My top priority every morning is to touch base with my admin staff.
  • I work hard on creating and supporting a happy work environment.
  • I also keep an open door and my staff know I am available 24 hours a day
  • I encourage collaboration when looking for solutions. As a team of admin staff and agents, we fill the role of ‘problem solvers’ for our clients and we love to brainstorm suitable outcomes that have the least amount of conflict.
  • All of my staff strive to give the best service to every client, no matter what. A lot of our success is down to this, and constant, useful communication.
  • My aim every day is to leave the office, knowing that I did my best I could
  • I prioritise my workload by tackling the most difficult tasks first thing in the morning.
  • I push my team to develop themselves on a personal level and in their professional lives. Self-growth and self-care are something that I work with them daily.

4. What challenges have you faced?

It is a big step to start your own business. The business environment and economic landscape are constantly changing. The first few years were the most difficult. I was always questioning myself, wondering whether I did the right thing. But after about three years, things came more easily for me, and I’ve learnt that putting ‘mind over matter’ and having a positive outlook helps enormously. A business is only as strong as the people working in it, and this proved to be an early challenge. Determining which applicants have the same values as yourself is a very difficult task but not one I was prepared to compromise on. At this moment I think I have the most loyal, hardworking, and trustworthy team, working together with me to grow the business to its full potential. Dealing patiently with demanding clients was another learning curve. Looking back, I realise that experience was the key here and with time I grew to handle these situations better.

5. What advice would you give someone thinking of buying a franchise?

  • Make sure there is a powerful team backing you in the Head Office in terms of support, guidance and ongoing training.
  • The franchise system needs to have tools and systems to make remote work efficient.
  • You need to feel assured that you will be supported in the growth of your own business.
  • A business owner needs to have a keen understanding of the market opportunity in their franchise area.
  • A franchisee needs to work hard at building and maintaining good relationships with local residents and business owners.

6. What are your future plans?

In 10 years from now, I want to look back and know that I’ve exceeded my expectations. I want to know that I grabbed every opportunity that came my way and made the most out of it

7. Would you do it again?

Being part of the Just Property brand was the best decision I could have made. Having 100% support from the dedicated team at Head Office is reassuring in so many ways. I could build my own business on my own terms, but with the guidance and leadership of a top-class Franchisor.  I never felt alone. My association with the Just Property brand is a partnership I am extremely proud of.
